What is wrong with being unnatural?

The concept of "naturalness" has often been used to excuse prejudice and discrimination. Queer existence, on a daily basis, is strongly marked by its unnaturalness and inconvenience.

But what if natural and unnatural are not opposites, but concepts that are created through repeated contrasts. So what is "natural"? Who decides what is "unnatural"?

We will consider this ambiguity from a gender perspective. Included in this issue are photographs by Fumika Endo, a photographer who focuses on animistic views of nature, and interviews with environmental activists TAO & Ririan Ono and Saya Oki, a professor at the University of Tokyo specializing in the history of science.

「自然」という概念を言い訳にした規範や偏見と差別によって、クィアの存在は日常的に不自然さや不自由さを強く意識づけられている。しかしながら、自然と不自然は相反するものではなく、対比を繰り返しながら作り上げられるコンセプト。そこで「自然」とは何か?誰が「不自然」を決めるのか、ジェンダーの視点からこの曖昧さについて考える。アニミズム的な自然観をテーマにする写真家・遠藤文香の撮り下ろし、環境系アクティビストのTAO&小野りりあんや科学史を専門する東京大学教授の隠岐さや香のインタビューを収録。
